International
Sport and Olympism
At
an international level, sport can be the subject of multifaceted research
:
- From
a point of view of geopolitics and international relations : The
very symbolic and media aspect of sport means that it is often used
as a means to promote a countryıs image. Large sporting events (among
which the Olympics are covered the most by the media) can thus symbolically
represent a platform where countries can present themselves to world,
often with varying objectives. To make this possible, they develop many
strategies (participate to confirm their presence on the international
scene, win to convey the notion of power, maximise investments in certain
disciplines rather than others....). .
- From
a point of view of factual knowledge : The distribution of sports
practices in the world, and the infrastructures required for these sports,
varies widely throughout the world. At the current time, simply to describe
these practices is a major objective in itself. The analysis can be
expanded beyond a simple description to include criteria such as the
level of development, socio-cultural traditions or sports policies put
in place. The analysis of womenıs sports in the world, for instance,
is a particularly enriching dimension.
- From
a land planning perspective : The analysis of events such as the
Olympic Games are of considerable interest to land planners. Indeed,
they represent a major organisational challenge for the host country
and city. The analysis of urban projects and land planning makes it
easier to understand the progress achieved in this area. The study of
the impact of such large events on the locality in terms of image (tourism),
improvement in quality of life (transport, facilities available to the
general population) are, of course, an integral part of our objectives.
